Good Food

I’ve finally had a full day of good food worth blogging about. Things here have been pretty calm, I’ve been doing a whole bunch of nothing and I’m trying to enjoy the relaxation and quiet rather than be bored with it. This is probably the last time in my life where I will have 2 months to focus on absolutely nothing but me so I need to take advantage of it while I can. As a result, I’ve been filling my days with running, reading, and relaxing. I’m getting the hang of it!

Breakfast

I slept like a log last night, I was exhausted for some reason! When I finally woke up around 8 (yes, that is considered sleeping in for me!) I made a quick bowl of cereal and then got back into bed to read for a few hours. It felt so lazy and luxurious, mmmmm.

Lunch

After I was done being a bum I ran some errands and made myself my very favorite lunch. Oh how I have missed my omelettes! Today’s was filled with red pepper and laughing cow. It was so perfect. I also had the traditional english muffin and pear to round out the meal.

Then me and my dad went to the car dealership to fill out the paperwork for my mom’s new car! I’m basically in love with this car, it’s amazing. I really don’t know anything about cars but this one is sleek and drives really smoothly so I like it. It’s an Acura but don’t ask me anything else about it because I have no idea! It’s silver. There, that’s about all I can tell you.

Snack

Cottage cheese, carrots, and cherries. I am seriously anxiously awaiting the return of my beloved rainer cherries which are basically my favorite food on earth. When I spot them at the grocery store you better believe I’m going to start jumping up and down screaming and make a scene because I’m just that excited. Hopefully I’ll be alone because whoever I’m with will absolutely pretend they don’t know me.

Dinner

I made the quickest, easiest, most delicious dinners tonight. Caramelized Scallops with brown rice and snap peas. So good! Definitely 5 stars. My dad told me it was one of his favorite meals that I’ve ever made. He doesn’t have incredibly high standards when it comes to food (ie-is just as happy eating a twinkie as he is a gourmet dessert…) but who doesn’t like a compliment? I have to admit, it was pretty delicious and there was no chopping involved which meant minimal clean-up which is always a plus in my book.

Dessert

And while I’m going on a cruise in a week and should probably be cutting back on the desserts in preparation for the smorgasbord of food, endless buffets, midnight dessert bars, and tropical drinks, I just couldn’t turn down a vanilla Dairy Queen with rainbow sprinkles. This is my favorite summertime (or anytime, really) treat, and I miss it so much when I’m at school. Ahhh, the simple pleasures in life.

Ok, I’d say it’s time to veg out on the couch with a movie, a cup of tea, and my slanket. Yes, I have a slanket. My friend bought it for me as a graduation present and it is actually the best gift I think I’ve ever gotten. It’s quite possible that I’m going to crank up the A/C way higher than my family would ever accept just so that I can cozy up in this all summer. Love.

Sleep

I seriously have slept more in the past 2 days than I have in the past 2 weeks, it’s been great! I’m really excited about focusing on my health again, including sleep. My friend put it pretty accurately when she said “everyone warns us of the Freshman 15, but nobody really prepares us for the Senior Week 15” and it’s so true. In the past week or so I’ve probably exercised maybe twice, barely slept, and ate and drank way too much. My body is in desperate need of some healthiness and I’m excited to provide just that.

Breakfast

I woke up this morning and knew exactly what I wanted for breakfast: WAFFLE TOWER obviously. I missed these.

After breakfast I went for a glorious run. It was a little tough to get myself moving at first, especially given the insane hills that surround my house, but once I got in the groove it felt great. 

Lunch

I headed to the store to pick up some heavy duty trash bags so that I could deep clean my room and while I was there I picked up a big salad with tofu. I have really been slacking in the veggie department lately (are olives veggies? Because I’ve been having plenty of those in my martinis but for some reason I don’t think that counts…)

I also tried some dried pineapple which was delicious but I don’t know if I would buy this again just because it was super expensive for a really small portion.

Snack

After lunch I went on a cleaning rampage and got rid of so much junk that had accumulated in my room and closet throughout the years. I had shoes and clothes that I haven’t worn since middle school! I also found some amazing pictures and middle school diaries which were fun to look through! I successfully cleaned and unpacked all my stuff which made me feel much better–I hate messes and disorganization! 

I worked up an appetite and had some crackers and pretzels while ordering some pictures.

Dinner

I was exhausted from all my unpacking so my dad and I decided to just go out to dinner at our favorite little bar/restaurant. I skipped the drinks tonight because I’m sort of becoming an alcoholic and just stuck with splitting some popcorn as an appetizer and a chicken salad with feta, berries, and cranberries for dinner.

Dessert

We rented the movie Doubt and I really enjoyed it. Meryl Streep is by far the best actress ever!  I wasn’t hungry but my sweet tooth was so I just had a few of my dad’s peanut m&ms and called it a night.

Happy Mother’s Day!

This is the first time in my life that I’m not home with my Mom for Mother’s Day, it makes me sad! I bet she’s sad too because I’m sure she knows that if I were home I would be cooking and baking up a storm for her. Don’t worry Mom, I’ll make it up to you!

It’s been so weird being done with classes and not really having anything to do. It’s boring! I’m a very goal-oriented person so just sitting around and wasting time makes me really anxious. 

Breakfast

Overnight Oats. While I was cleaning out my cupboards I found just enough oatmeal left for 1 last bowl, and boy was it a good one. I made it the usual way: 1/2 c oats mixed with 1 T flax and a pinch of salt soaked overnight in 1/2c water. Then this morning I added 1/2 c greek yogurt, 1 banana, and cinnamon! So good.

Snack

After catching up on some blogs I decided to start packing. I still have a lot of time until I leave (1 week!) but I was bored so I got started on what I could. My room looks so sad and lonely with all the pictures and decorations taken down. Packing really made me hungry though so I had my favorite (and last, boooo) WCMN. I better be able to find these at home!

Then I hit the gym. Campus is pretty much deserted right now except for the seniors so the gym was gloriously empty. I got in a great workout! I’ve been participating in Gina’s Summer Shape Up Challenge and I LOVE IT!!! My workouts had been getting really repetitive and dull so this challenge was the perfect motivation to shake things up. Gina seriously knows what she’s talking about too! After doing the legs workout I could barely walk down stairs of sit down for days! That sort of soreness that comes after a great strength workout is the best feeling ever! Am I right?

Lunch

I came home and promptly made myself some lunch. Salmon pouch pita, carrots, and cottage cheese. These Rachel’s cottage cheese’s are my new obsession. I love them! So far I’ve only tried the sweet flavors but I bet the savory would be good too. I think they have just the right amount of sweetness to them and I like the consistency a lot. Definitely give them a try!

Snacks

After lunch I took a nice long walk to enjoy the beautiful sunshine. I love when spring finally comes to Boston because people come out of hibernation and everything is so alive and exciting. It’s great! I got home and was hungry again so I munched on an apple, carrots, and a yogurt. I couldn’t seem to get full!

Dinner

For dinner my friends were going to Panera so I obviously jumped onboard. I love it there but there isn’t one that is convenient to get to without a car here so I can’t go very often unless someone is willing to drive me. I got the Asian sesame chicken salad, wheat baguette, and a fruit cup and it was just as good as I remembered. I was a little disappointed that the Strawberry Poppyseed Salad wasn’t back yet though because that’s my favorite!

I don’t really have anything else on the agenda tonight (I’m so bored!) so I think I’ll just catch up on some of the tv that I missed due to crazy work at the end of the semester. I’m like a month behind on 30 Rock!

No Fun or Games

Tomorrow is my final exam for Game Theory, which turned out to be my most difficult class this semester. Despite its misleading name–this class is anything but a game. It’s so hard! I’ve taken much higher level econ classes in the past and gotten by without no trouble but this class has just been a killer. Ugh. At this point I don’t even care anymore and just want it to be over!

Preworkout

Since I knew I would be spending the majority of the day in the library I decided to head out for a run first thing this morning. We’re having some crazy weather here in Boston and today it reached 90*!! Holy cow! I did 4ish miles and was sweating buckets by the end. Before I left I had a Kashi bar for some fuel.

Breakfast

The heat really got to me and even after chugging a ton of water and taking a cold shower my appetite was just not there. I knew I needed something to get my brain working so I had a creamy, cool bowl of yogurt and banana. I definitely made up for my lack of appetite throughout the day—when I run outside my metabolism goes into overdrive or something, I’ve been eating all day long!

Lunch

As expected, I was in the library the whole entire day. I packed a turkey sandwich with carrots, tomatoes, and PB crackers for lunch, which I unfortunately ate while working away so I couldn’t even enjoy it.

Snack

A cara cara orange. LOVE THESE! Also when I stopped back at the house mid-day I desperately needed a pick-me-up so I had some amazing blondies that I had stuck in the freezer to prevent me from eating the entire tray at once, and a few hershey kisses. It’s just been one of those days, you know?

Dinner

I had a meeting at 5 for my sorority and then I headed back to the library with a quick detour at the campus center to pick up a big salad and akmaks for dinner. I was starving and literally inhaled it! It was good.

Dessert

I was sitting in a window-less section of the library with intense fluorescent lights and was intently studying, which caused me to totally lose track of time. All of a sudden a wave of tiredness hit me and I noticed it was already almost 10:00! While I still have a lot of work to do, I don’t like walking home that late at night because it’s pretty unsafe here. I basically sprinted back to my house and realized that not only was I tired, but I was hungry too!  I had a biscotti which got melty from being in my hot, hot, hot room and then I cut up a delicious apple with cinnamon and now I’m ready to get back to studying.

No matter how it goes tomorrow, come 11:45 it’ll be over and I’ll be so relieved!

Time Warp

I feel like I’m in some sort of time warp or something—I just have no clue where the day went! It was pretty productive though and I’m feeling pretty good about my paper! 

Brunch

Like I mentioned earlier I went out to brunch with my sorority family and had a great time, like always. Along with about a gallon of coffee I ordered egg whites, fruit salad, and whole wheat english muffin. It’s so weird, I never feel like eggs for breakfast at home but I always crave them when I go out. Strange!

Snacks

After a few hours at the library I was going stir-crazy and needed a break. I hit up the gym for a fantastic workout. It felt so great to just forget about schoolwork for a little bit and work up a sweat.

I introduced my friend to cara cara oranges last night and she just had to go buy some so I accompanied her to Whole Foods and then we did more work at the Starbucks next door. Rather than an official lunch I picked up a bunch of snacks to eat throughout the afternoon which is much more conducive to studying in my opinion! I had some fruit and yogurt, followed by a granola bar, and then some trail mix.

My friend was sharing the trail mix with me and in the process of eating it I sort of came to a revelation. Normally I portion out a serving, eat it too fast, go back for more, and more, and more, am never really satisfied, and end up eating way too much of it. Well today, I just ate straight out of the container, and ate slowly throughout the afternoon, picking up one thing at a time and really enjoying it. I’m not sure exactly how much I ate but I still have a ton left so it couldn’t have been too much! I think my problem is that when I give myself a very specific amount and tell myself that’s all I can have it makes it that much more tempting to go back for more. The rigidity I impose on myself just sets me up for failure. But when I know that it is there and I can have as much of it as I want, it sort of loses it’s ‘off-limits’ appeal and I don’t overdo it. I haven’t exactly worked out what this all means but I’m definitely going to keep experimenting with this concept.

Dinner

I got home and couldn’t spend one more second looking at that paper today so I hung out with my friends for a little bit and then had dinner. Tonight was another wonderful Amy’s frozen dinner: Roasted Vegetable Lasagna. Oh so good. I especially love the crunchy edges that sort of stick to the container. Haha, so good.

Dessert

Look what finally came back into my life: Peanut Butter Cookie Larabar. There were only 2 left and you better believe I snatched them up faster than you could even imagine. I savored every single bite of this baby and am beyond ecstatic to have these back! This seriously made my week!

We don’t have classes tomorrow because of Patriots Day which is some made up holiday in MA. Maybe it’s in honor of the marathon? I have no idea. Anyway, some of my friends are going out and I might join them but not drink since I plan on getting tot he library bright and early tomorrow morning and need my sleep! I was up at 6:45 again this morning for absolutely no reason. I don’t get it, I wish I could just sleep in! Grrrr. 

Anyway, have a great night and a painless Monday!

SPRING

It was the most gorgeous spring day here, clear blue skies, sweatshirt weather, sun shining down. I loved it! I tried to take advantage of it as much as possible with a few walks and a quick run throughout the day. I have to hurry now though because I have a philanthropy event for my sorority which starts at 8 and I still need to get pretty : )

Breakfast

Cereal, almond milk, banana. It was so good to have my cereal mix back in my life.

The usual turkey, laughing cow sandwich, carrots, apple, and a special treat were these late july pb crackers which I absolutely loved!

Its so hard to believe that I only have 2 more or each class before the semester is over! It sure did fly by!

Snack

Apple Cinnamon Pure Bar. This was definitely another winner! I love them all!

Dinner

Sweet potato/ cottage cheese love. It looks like a heart doesn’t it! And another cara cara orange. I found this variety at Whole Foods and if you spot it when you’re there, definitely give it a try! It’s amazing. And no seeds!

Sorry this is so fast but I really gotta run! It’s one of my friends’ 21st birthday and I’m getting peer pressure into going out. I have a lot of work to do, but I don’t have class again until Tuesday so I’m debating it—I definitely could use a chance to blow off some stress. We shall see!

Slow Down!

For once I actually wish that the week would slow down because my workload is not getting any lighter but the time I have to complete it is dwindling. Ahhh, freaking out!  Today was quite the rollercoaster of a day—my morning and afternoon were horrendous but then I went out to dinner with my Little and everything really turned around. I LOVE HER!!! I actually told her about my blog! I think she partly thinks I’m absolutely crazy but I actually am so it’s all good. I hope she’s reading–hi Danielle!

Breakfast

Up early again today but I wasn’t as productive as yesterday—I should have hit the library first thing but my cozy bed wouldn’t let me leave. I did get to try something new for breakfast though. Kristina from Stonyfield sent me some coupons to try Oikos Greek Yogurt and this morning I gave the vanilla a shot. I was definitely skeptical at first because I have tried the Chobani vanilla in the past and wasn’t a fan–I thought the taste was off and it was sort of chalky or something. The Oikos was really good though! The flavor was great and it was very creamy. My only complaint is that it wasn’t as thick as the plain greek yogurt that I’m used to and love so much. I have some other flavors to try and I can’t wait!

I mixed the yogurt with a pear and had a delicious breakfast.

Reunited and it Feels SOOOO Good

Usually I celebrate Passover for 8 days as is custom of Conservative Jews but I decided to break it at 7 days like the Reform Jews because my brain and body were desperate for complex carbs and wholesome grains. 

I had a whole wheat sandwich thin with peanut butter, carrots, and pear mangosteen cottage cheese. First of all, sinking my teeth into the bread was the best feeling ever and after this meal my ’emptiness’ in my tummy was finally gone after a week! Secondly, this cottage cheese was AMAZING. It was pricey which is too bad because it was perfect. Just the right amount of flavor and sweetness to make it delicious without being overwhelming. I can’t wait to try other flavors.

Snack

After a mediocre yoga practice and a not so fun doctors appointment I spent the entire afternoon in the library. Don’t worry I packed up some snacks to keep things interesting: KIND bar and orange. I wasn’t too crazy about this flavor though, it was a little too sweet, even for me!

Dinner

I finally emerged from the library for a brief break to go to dinner with Danielle in the cutest little cafe: Danish Pastry House. I had the best ginger lemon iced tea and ordered the incredible DPH signature salad with goat cheese, almonds, cranberries and balsamic vinagrette along with a roll. It was so delicious and satisfying. We sat and chatted about anything and everything for 1.5 hours which was the perfect little break.

Then it was back to the library for even more research, but I finally feel like I’m actually making progress, which is great. I’m exhausted from staying at the libs which really makes me think of the fond memories I have from freshman and sophomore year when I wouldn’t even get to the library until 11 and would stay until 3-4 in the morning!! HOW did I do that?! Ha. Goodnight!
